Stepnogorsk Historical and Local History Museum
The Stepnogorsk Historical and Local History Museum is a significant scientific, educational, and cultural institution established with the aim of preserving, studying, and widely promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the Akmola Region. The museum was founded on January 6, 1994, on the basis of the Hall of Labor Glory of the Tselinny Mining and Chemical Combine. The initiative arose from the need to systematize the labor and social history of industrial enterprises and preserve regional historical memory.
Today, the museum consists of five main exhibition halls, each covering key stages in the historical and cultural development of the region:
1. Introductory Hall - presents the historical and geographical landscape of the Akmola Region. It features dioramas depicting the formation of the city of Stepnogorsk ("City. Stepnogorsk," "First Mining Shafts of Shantobe") and regional maps.
2. Nature and Archaeology Hall - displays valuable archaeological artifacts uncovered during expeditions in the Shonankorasy valley near Stepnogorsk. Panoramic scenes titled "Water World" and "Steppe" visually illustrate the region’s natural richness.
3. Ethnographic Hall - showcases the traditional lifestyle, culture, and crafts of the Kazakh people. The exhibition includes models of yurts, household items, and national clothing, reflecting the ethnic identity of the local population.
4. Hall of Military Glory - dedicated to the heroism of local residents during the Great Patriotic War and participants in military operations in Afghanistan. It features a photo gallery of veterans, personal belongings from the front lines, letters sent home, and dioramas depicting wartime scenes.
5. Contemporary Hall - highlights the industrial development of Stepnogorsk. Informational panels, models, photographs, documents, and exhibits tell the story of local enterprises and labor veterans who contributed significantly to the city’s formation.
The museum carries out scientific, cultural, and educational activities not only at the local level but also internationally. It has established a close partnership with the Nicholas Roerich Society in Novosibirsk, which contributes to intercultural dialogue and the development of interregional museum cooperation.
In addition, the Stepnogorsk Historical and Local History Museum is an active participant in the city’s cultural life. It regularly organizes and hosts public educational events, commemorative celebrations, and cultural programs. The museum’s original projects - "Museum Without Borders" and "Sacred Land - Stepnogorsk" - are widely known among local residents and play a crucial role in fostering historical awareness and patriotism.
Today, the Stepnogorsk Historical and Local History Museum is strengthening its position as a key scientific and cultural center dedicated to preserving cultural heritage and shaping the spiritual and cultural consciousness of future generations.
