Lid

Description

A lid made of clay, hand-formed and fired. It is circular and domed in shape. In the centre is a vertically raised cylindrical handle. The upper part of the handle is connected to an arched loop through which a movable ring-shaped element is inserted. The rim is rounded and slightly thickened.
The upper surface is decorated with wavy lines, dotted impressions, crescent-shaped motifs, and obliquely arranged geometric patterns. Part of the decoration was made by incising and impressing the surface of the unfired clay. Along the lower part and on some areas, a leaf-like vegetal ornament applied with a mould or stamp is preserved.
The lid was a household object used to cover the mouth of a medieval ceramic vessel. The handle and ring facilitated lifting and removing the lid.
The object is an archaeological source illustrating the pottery production of the Otyrar region in the 11th-12th centuries, the decorative traditions of household ceramics, and the use of different ornamentation techniques.
