Jug

Description

A jug made of yellow clay using the hand-building technique and firing. It has a rounded form, a convex body, an elongated neck, and a rounded base with an uneven surface. Part of the rim is missing. Two rows of wave-shaped decoration are applied around the neck. The edge of the rim is decorated with notched impressions made by pressing a hard tool into the surface of the unfired clay. A spout for pouring liquid is located on one side of the body; its outer part has not survived. A curved handle connects the neck with the body. The outer surface of the handle is decorated with circular impressions made by stamping the soft clay. A stylised animal resembling a lion is incised on the body. The outer surface of the vessel is unpainted and unglazed. The neck has been reconstructed from four fragments.
The jug was used as a household vessel for storing and pouring liquids. The spout facilitated controlled pouring, while the handle was intended for holding the vessel.
The object is an archaeological source illustrating the ceramic production traditions, everyday material culture, and ceramic decoration techniques of the population of the Otyrar oasis during the 6th-9th centuries.
