Tubek

Description

A tübek made of transparent light-green glass using the glassblowing technique. The vessel is cylindrical in form, with walls that narrow slightly towards the bottom. The rim flares widely outward and its edge is folded inward. The inner surface of the rim is slightly concave. The base is rounded, with its central part pushed inward. The walls are thin, while the base is comparatively thicker.
The vessel has been reassembled and bonded from several broken fragments. The joins between the fragments are clearly visible on the outer surface.
The tübek was used as a hygiene vessel fitted into a traditional infant cradle (besik) and functioned together with a special spout (shümek). Archaeological and museum evidence from the Otyrar region documents medieval glass tübek and shümek associated with infant hygiene.
The object is an archaeological source illustrating the development of glass production in Otyrar during the 11th-12th centuries, the technology of blown-glass vessel manufacture, and the everyday hygiene practices of the urban population.
