An exemplar of traditional Kazakh applied art, this piece masterfully bridges the functional demands of equestrian equipment with sophisticated artistic design. Classified as an “üyrek bas er” (duck-headed saddle) based on the shape of its front pommel, the saddle features a pommel that extends gracefully upward and curves forward. Resembling the stylized head of a waterfowl, this form imparts sculptural harmony to the object while linking it to the zoomorphic iconography of nomadic culture. The wooden saddle tree is clad in leather and lavishly decorated with engraved and stamped metal plaques of diverse shapes and sizes, alongside decorative-headed nails that establish a rhythmic pattern. Suspended on either side are leather stirrup straps carrying wide metal stirrups embellished with chased ornamentation. Meticulously handcrafted and proportioned to suit both male and female human anatomy, this saddle assembly provided optimal rider comfort while alleviating the load on the horse’s back and protecting it from injury.
