Portrait of Kulyash

Description

Author: Nurzhumayev, Oralbek. 1938-1996
A half-length portrait of a woman in an interior, seated on a chair in three-quarter view to the right, her left hand resting on the chair back; she wears a yellow dress with a red insert at the bodice. The background is treated in generalised fashion, in broad planes of bluish-grey tones, with the outlines of objects on the window indicated at left. The painterly manner is free and impasto, the forms modelled with large strokes without detailed finishing. The colour scheme is built on the contrast between the warm tones of the clothing and the cool surroundings.
