Author: Nurmukhammedov, Nagimbek. 1924-1986
A portrait of the People’s Artist of the Kazakh SSR Abylkhan Kasteev (1904-1973), founder of the national school of fine arts of Kazakhstan. The master is depicted seated on a chair in a gray suit, white shirt, and tie, holding a palette and brush; a calm, direct gaze is turned toward the viewer. The restrained posture imparts dignity and inner focus to the image of the artist at work. A neutral background rendered in generalized planes of warm tone does not distract from the face and hands, which serve as the semantic centers of the portrait. The painterly approach is realistic, with a restrained palette based on closely related gray-ochre tones, animated by the red accent of the tie
