Author: Kasteyev, Abylkhan. 1904-1973
A portrait of Abai Kunanbayev - the great Kazakh poet, thinker, and enlightener - set against a steppe landscape. The poet is portrayed in a close-up seated pose on rocks, dressed in a dark suit with a light chapan draped over his shoulders and a traditional cap (taqiya) on his head. In his hand, he holds an open volume of Pushkin’s works, symbolizing his enlightening mission. Beyond him stretches a broad steppe dotted with yurts and grazing livestock, while light-colored mountains extend in the distance beneath a clear sky. The color palette is built on a restrained harmony between the deep tones of the main figure, the warm ochre-green shades of the steppe and the blue hues of the mountains, drawing primary focus to his expressive face. The artist’s meticulous, detailed painting technique and deep attention to psychological characterization align the work with the tradition of realistic portraiture. At the lower right - signature and date.
