Description
Author: Kasteyev, Abylkhan. 1904-1973
A multi-figured genre-dramatic composition depicting the scene of a girl’s forced abduction in the night steppe. In front of two yurts stand a rider and two saddled horses ready for flight; in the center, two men forcibly drag a young girl along the ground while her mother desperately tries not to let her go. To the right lies a bound man who was unable to prevent the kidnapping. In the background, thickets of trees and the outlines of mountains are set beneath a gloomy night sky. The color palette is built on a muted, cool range of blue-green and gray-brown night tones, out of which illuminated figures emerge, heightening the drama and tension of the scene. The dynamic composition, expressive gestures, and detailed realistic painting style align the work with the tradition of genre painting that exposes the harsh customs of the past. At the lower right - signature and date.
