Description

The blacksmith’s main tool used for working various metals either hot or cold. The face of the anvil is hardened and made of high-quality steel. At the base of the horn, that is, at the back of the anvil, there is a softer area intended for cutting metal, and on the heel side of the top surface there are one round and one square hole. The round hole is used for inserting various cutting tools, while the square hole is used for fitting different auxiliary tools. Anvils are mounted on blocks cut crosswise from hard types of wood such as birch, elm, or oak. The blacksmith usually works standing. Therefore, to prevent back strain and to make hammering comfortable, the anvil is set at such a height that when the blacksmith stands upright with the arm hanging freely and the fist clenched, the knuckles just touch the anvil’s face.
