Description
The breast ornament is made of 925 sterling silver and consists of two flat plates of rectangular and pentagonal forms. The main elements are connected by narrow metal strips decorated with granulation. The surfaces of the plates feature raised amulet-like ornamentation and pinkish decorative inserts of oval and beak-like shapes. The lower section is fitted with pendants in the form of small bells attached by a double twisted chain. The complex multi-level construction and elaborate decoration are characteristic of traditional Kazakh female jewellery. The object is of considerable artistic and ethnographic value as an example of 19th-century silversmithing.
