Description

Author: Lipkin, Maxim. 1907-1991
A genre composition set in an interior, capturing a section of a room where a woman covered to the waist with a blanket lies on a bed, as a child clings their face against her chest. To the left stand a table and a window, while in the background depth a framed painting hangs upon the wall. Executed in the vein of Soviet expressive realism with undertones of theatrical design, the space is staged like a mise-en-scène, where the window drapery and the contours of the bed act as side curtains, heightening the claustrophobic tragedy of the blockade. The painterly style is swift, marked by impasto, broken brushwork and sharp, almost graphic contours that bring the study close to a wartime sketch. The color scheme is resolved in an austere earthy-brown and grey palette characteristic of the siege, where sparse accents of dim light accentuate the cold and tragedy of the moment. Imbued with grief and a poignant human vulnerability, the image records both personal pain and the quiet everyday heroism of the city’s inhabitants.
