The Historical and Local Lore Museum of Alash and Kaiyrzhan Khasanov

In July 2024, the Karatobe District of West Kazakhstan Region witnessed a significant cultural event - the grand opening of the Historical and Local History Museum “Alash and Kaiyrzhan Khasanov.” This institution is not merely a museum, but aspires to become a scientific and educational center dedicated to preserving the historical memory of Karatobe and ensuring the continuity of the spiritual heritage of the Alash movement.

The museum is located in Karatobe, a region of particular historical significance to the Alash movement. In the early 20th century, important congresses and discussions of the Alash intelligentsia took place here - figures who championed ideas of national independence and the establishment of a democratic state. The construction of the museum in this very location stands as a symbol of historical justice and demonstrates respect for the legacy of Alash.

The museum is named after Kaiyrzhan Kanekbaevich Khasanov, a well-known journalist, local historian, and public figure in West Kazakhstan. He was the author of numerous popular science articles, dedicating his life to researching the history of Karatobe and making a significant contribution to shaping the spiritual identity of his native land. His works serve as valuable historical sources and lay the foundation for future research.

The idea to establish the museum was first proposed during a Forum of Fellow Countrymen held in Karatobe in 2019. The sons of Kaiyrzhan Khasanov - Yerzhan and Nurzhan Kaiyrzhanovich - continue their father’s legacy and are actively involved in the cultural and spiritual development of their native region. For many years, they have supported philanthropic and community initiatives. In August 2019, Yerzhan Kaiyrzhanovich laid the foundation stone for the museum building, coordinating the project with local authorities and members of the intelligentsia. These efforts culminated in the opening of the new museum building in 2024, which now serves the public good.

The “Alash and Kaiyrzhan Khasanov” Historical and Local History Museum is the first cultural facility in Karatobe equipped to modern standards. The museum’s exhibition is divided into two main areas:

1. The History of the Alash Movement and the National Liberation Ideas of the Early 20th Century. This section presents materials about the Alash congress held in Karatobe, the lives and work of its key figures, and the activities of the Western Branch of Alash Orda, along with its historical legacy.

2. The Creative Legacy of Kaiyrzhan Khasanov and the History of Karatobe

This section includes manuscripts, articles, collected historical photographs, oral histories, and information related to local folklore. It also displays exhibits related to the archaeological, ethnographic, and cultural monuments of the Karatobe District.

The museum is envisioned as a base for hosting scientific conferences, research seminars, and roundtable discussions dedicated to the history of the Alash movement. This initiative lays the groundwork for transforming Karatobe into not only a regional, but also a national center for historical scholarship.
