House-Museum of E. Pugachev

The House-Museum of Yemelyan Pugachev is one of the structural divisions of the West Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore. This site is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Kazakhstan as a rare example of 18th-century architecture. The building was constructed around the mid-18th century and is considered an important witness to the Peasants' War of 1773 - 1775 led by Yemelyan Pugachev.

The house once belonged to a Ural Cossack named Pyotr Kuznetsov. According to historical sources, it was in this very house that Yemelyan Pugachev declared himself Emperor Peter III and held a wedding with Pyotr Kuznetsov’s daughter, Ustinya. This episode gives the building particular historical significance.

In 1967, part of the house was converted into a library and a museum dedicated to Pugachev, and in 1991, the entire building was turned into a museum exhibition. Since then, it has held the official status of the House-Museum of Yemelyan Pugachev and has become a branch of the West Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore. In 2005, an ethnographic complex was established on the museum grounds, allowing visitors to visually explore elements of everyday life in the 18th century.

The museum’s exhibition is organized into several thematic halls:

1. Introductory Hall - features materials on the history of the formation of the city of Uralsk (formerly called Yaitsk).

2. Hall of the Uprising - contains historical documents and exhibits revealing the causes, progress, and consequences of the Peasants' War of 1773-1775 led by Pugachev.

3. Hall of Everyday Life and Culture of the Ural Cossacks in the Second Half of the 18th Century - displays household items, clothing samples, and scenes from daily life of that era.

4. The “Gornitsa” Room - recreates the interior of a traditional Cossack dwelling. On the museum grounds, there is also a reconstruction of a historical and ethnographic site known as the “Cossack Courtyard.” Its front part includes a summer kitchen and a cellar, while the rear features a cattle yard and utility buildings.

The House-Museum of Yemelyan Pugachev is a significant site not only for studying the regional history but also for analyzing the socio-political events of the 18th century throughout Kazakhstan. The museum carries out research, educational, and cultural-educational activities.
