Fishermen’s Museum
The "Fishermen's Museum" branch of the Aral District Museum of History and Local Lore, a structural division of the Kyzylorda Regional Museum of History and Local Lore (a communal state treasury enterprise), is a specialized cultural institution established with the aim of collecting, preserving, and popularizing the historical stages of the development of the fishing industry in the Aral region. This museum is a unique site that reflects the history of professional maritime fishing in Kazakhstan, as well as the ecological and socio-economic significance of the Aral Sea.
The Fishermen's Museum was officially opened in 2012. According to Order No. 203 of the Financial Department of Kyzylorda Region dated August 10, 2012, the museum building was transferred to the balance of the Aral District Museum of History and Local Lore. The initiative to establish the museum was put forward by Kuanishbek Sarzhanov, President of the public association Shartken-Ata. The museum is housed in a one-story purpose-built facility. In 2021, the museum underwent comprehensive restoration and re-exhibition work, modernizing its infrastructure in accordance with contemporary museum standards and expanding its exhibition capabilities.
The total area of the museum is 107.0 square meters. In the courtyard, a 5 x 25 meter hull of the Lev Berg ship is installed, along with three mid-20th-century fishing boats exhibited as historical artifacts. These outdoor exhibits form part of an open-air museum, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a bygone era.
The museum’s collection includes approximately 2,000 material and photo-documentary artifacts. These include fishing gear, ship captain equipment, fragments of old vessels, archival documents and photographs, materials related to the fish processing industry, as well as objects reflecting the lifestyle and culture of fishermen.
The museum consists of the following exhibition halls:
1. "Fishermen" Hall - This hall presents a comprehensive history of the development of the fishing industry in the Aral region. The exhibition includes portraits, biographies, and achievements of fishermen who were Heroes of Socialist Labor, recipients of state awards, and prominent public figures. Historical photographs, archival materials, fishing tools, and everyday items portraying the life of Aral fishermen are also displayed.
2. "Ships" Hall - Dedicated to maritime vessels and navigation, this hall features models of ships that once sailed on the Aral Sea, technical equipment, navigational tools, and personal belongings and uniforms of ship captains. The exhibition includes interactive elements: modern video installations and documentary films illustrating the operation of sea vessels. These displays immerse visitors in the historical realities of maritime life.
The Fishermen’s Museum plays a significant role in preserving and promoting the historical memory of the region. The museum staff actively collect, study, classify, and safeguard culturally and historically valuable artifacts. In addition, the museum organizes exhibitions, guided tours, educational lectures, and thematic events, contributing to the development of historical awareness among the public, fostering patriotism among younger generations, and promoting cultural tourism.
