Shieli District Historical and Local Lore Museum

The Shieli District Museum of History and Local Lore is a cultural and educational institution established with the aim of systematically studying, preserving, and promoting the history, archaeology, ethnography, and cultural heritage of the Syr Darya region. The museum was officially founded in accordance with Resolution No. 935 issued by the Akim of Shieli District on December 5, 2016, and was registered on January 4, 2017, by Order No. 1 of the Shieli District Department of Justice of the Department of Justice of Kyzylorda Region under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since 2019, based on a resolution of the regional akimat, the museum has been restructured as a branch of the State Communal Government Enterprise "Kyzylorda Regional Museum of History and Local Lore."

From 2017 to 2024, the museum operated at the address: 95 Yassaui Street, Shieli settlement, in a one-story brick building constructed in 2012.

In 2024, as part of the region-wide Year of Spirituality ("Rukhaniyat zhylı"), a Spirituality Center was built and commissioned in the Shieli district, into which the museum was subsequently relocated.

Today, the museum occupies a space of 666 square meters, comprising one exhibition hall and a funds storage room. The exhibition hall presents materials covering the historical stages of development of Shieli District from ancient times to the present.

The exhibition allows visitors to trace the continuity of cultures and the material heritage of the region from ancient and medieval times, including the legacy of the Great Silk Road, to modern and contemporary periods. Additionally, it showcases samples of ethnography and applied arts, including household items, traditional clothing, jewelry, and artifacts made of wood and ceramics.

The museum’s collection consists of 3,028 items, of which 1,326 belong to the main collection, and 1,702 to the auxiliary fund. These artifacts reflect various aspects of the region’s history, culture, agriculture, education, and the arts.

One of the museum’s key activities is the research and documentation of the region’s historical and cultural heritage, as well as the expansion of its collection through the acquisition of valuable artifacts. Another important mission of the museum is to foster historical and cultural awareness among the younger generation. In collaboration with the Shieli District Department of Education, the museum regularly organizes educational and tourist excursions for schoolchildren to the Okshy Ata Mausoleum and the medieval Syganak settlement.

At present, the Shieli District Museum of History and Local Lore serves as an important spiritual and cultural center that contributes to the formation of the region’s historical and cultural identity.
