Literary and Memorial Museum Complex of S. Mukanov and G. Musrepov

The Sabit Mukanov Literary and Memorial Museum is a cultural and educational institution established to preserve, study, and promote the life and literary legacy of Sabit Mukanov, a classic of Kazakh literature, prominent writer, and public figure. The museum was opened in 1978 at the initiative of his close friend, the well-known statesman Khakim Bekishev. The work on the artistic design and exhibition planning began in 1976, led by a creative team under the direction of renowned restorer and artist Shamil Kozhakhanov. After two years of work, the official opening of the museum took place on November 21, 1978, in the house where the writer had lived in Almaty. That same year, a commemorative plaque created by sculptor Toktagazy Zhanizbekov was installed on the building.

The museum's exhibition is based on a rich collection of documents reflecting the writer's personal life, creative path, and socio-political activities. It houses Sabit Mukanov’s manuscripts, official and personal belongings, rare photographs, correspondence, books, and literary publications. Additionally, the museum includes a historically accurate reconstruction of the writer’s study and living space, allowing visitors to experience the spirit of a bygone era.

In 1989, a re-exhibition was carried out at the initiative of a creative team led by art critic and member of the Union of Designers of Kazakhstan, Beket Musrepov. During this period, the content of the exhibition was deepened and enhanced with new conceptual approaches. In 1987, a memorial house-museum of another major figure in Kazakh literature-writer and playwright Gabit Makhmutovich Musrepov - was opened in the same building. The project was managed by his daughter, Engelina Gabitovna Musrepova. The museum showcases unique exhibits related to G. Musrepov’s life and work, including archival documents, personal items, rare photographs, and his literary heritage. On February 8, 1999, by a decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the two separate museums of S. Mukanov and G. Musrepov were merged into a single institution: the State Literary and Memorial Museum Complex named after Sabit Mukanov and Gabit Musrepov. This cultural institution serves as a fundamental scientific and cultural center focused on the systematic study, preservation, and wide popularization of the spiritual heritage of the classics of Kazakh literature.

Today, the museum complex not only conducts exhibition activities but also engages in active scientific research, publishing, and educational work. It regularly hosts conferences, literary evenings, educational excursions for schoolchildren and students, scientific seminars, and exhibitions.
