Museum of nature
The Museum of Nature is one of Kazakhstan’s leading scientific institutions, dedicated to presenting the country’s paleontological and zoological features, the evolution of the animal world, and the historical formation of natural ecosystems within a scientific and educational context. The museum's primary mission is to comprehensively study, preserve, and promote Kazakhstan’s natural wealth while contributing to the development of ecological culture in society. The museum’s exposition is based on rare scientific materials related to fossil remains and representatives of the animal kingdom found within the territory of Kazakhstan. The collection encompasses a wide temporal range of faunal evolution and systematically reflects natural processes and changes from ancient geological epochs to the present day. Among the museum's most notable exhibits are the skeletons of extinct animals such as the giant rhinoceros, the mastodon (a relative of the mammoth), and predatory dinosaurs, including a six-meter-long Tarbosaurus. These specimens are of significant scientific value and contribute to the international recognition of Kazakhstan’s natural and historical heritage.
The idea of establishing the museum originated in the 1950s. It was supported and institutionalized by the first president of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, academician Kanysh Imantayevich Satpayev. In 1959, the museum began receiving its first visitors, and it was officially opened on April 29, 1961, by Resolution No. 44 of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.
A key focus of the museum’s geological research is the Phanerozoic era, covering approximately 570 million years up to the present. Through the study of flora and fauna remains characteristic of this era, museum researchers are reconstructing the biological diversity and historical transformation of natural environments within Kazakhstan. These studies enhance understanding of natural changes and migratory processes of the animal world across the Northern Hemisphere.
A pivotal moment in the development of paleontological research in Kazakhstan occurred in 1912, with the discovery of the skeleton of a giant rhinoceros. This drew the attention of the international scientific community. Subsequent fieldwork in the Turgai Valley, the Zaisan Depression, and Central Kazakhstan led to the discovery of unique remains of prehistoric animals, which enriched the museum’s scientific collections and deepened its exhibition content.
Significant contributions to the museum’s formation were made by scientists from the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR between 1932 and 1958. They systematically studied Kazakhstan’s fauna and compiled extensive zoological collections. Comprehensive paleontological and geological expeditions conducted between 1948 and 1957 brought a substantial number of prehistoric fossil materials to the museum, forming the core of its current exhibitions.
Today, the Museum of Nature is renowned for its research, educational, and environmental initiatives. It actively participates in national and international projects aimed at the study and preservation of natural heritage, serving as a reliable source of information for the scientific community. The museum also plays a vital role in ecological education for young people, fostering respect for nature through educational programs, exhibitions, and public outreach initiatives.
