Zhalagash District Historical and Local Lore Museum

Zhalagash District Historical and Local History Museum is a scientific and cultural institution that plays an important role in the cultural and educational sphere of Kyzylorda Region. The museum is dedicated to the systematic study, preservation, and popularization of the region’s history, natural and geographical features, archaeology, ethnography, as well as its socio-cultural development. It was officially established by the decision of the Akim of Zhalagash District No. 144 on November 10, 1999, and began serving the local population in January 2000. In August-September 2020, re-exhibition work was carried out in the museum, resulting in renewed exhibits both in terms of content and design. The new concept-based displays include the following thematic sections:

• The Alash Movement and representatives of the Alash Orda government;

• Zhalagash-born internationalist soldiers;

• Political leaders of the district from 1939 to 2020;

• Workers and veterans of the education, culture, and healthcare sectors.

The museum comprises two main exhibition halls and one temporary exhibition hall, where materials are presented in chronological order - from the geological history of the territory (from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, approximately 70-67 million years ago) to the contemporary socio-cultural landscape of the district.

Thematic directions of the exhibition include:

• Geological and paleontological data;

• The administrative formation of Zhalagash District;

• Public economy (agriculture, irrigation, livestock and crop production);

• Heroism of local residents during the Great Patriotic War (World War II);

• Social transformations during the Soviet period;

• Development milestones in the years of Kazakhstan’s independence;

• History of regional education, culture, and biographies of notable figures in the arts.

Many of the artifacts on display were found and donated by local residents, which underscores the museum’s close connection with the community.

According to Resolution No. 1301 issued by the Akim of Kyzylorda Region on December 28, 2018, the museum has operated since February 2019 as a branch of the Kyzylorda Regional Museum of History and Local Studies. This reorganization allowed for the professional integration of the museum's research and exhibition work into the regional context and enabled collaborative work with regional scientific councils.

Today, with nearly 24 years of history, the museum continues to actively collect, classify, and provide scholarly descriptions of archaeological, ethnographic, and documentary artifacts that reflect the historical trajectory of Zhalagash District. It also works closely with local schools, veterans’ councils, cultural centers, and regional historians to organize themed exhibitions, public history projects, guided tours, seminars, and academic conferences.

One of the museum’s key scientific missions is the comprehensive study of the material and spiritual heritage of the ancestors who lived in the region, and the development of educational resources and documentary publications based on these findings.
