The sitter wears a suit, a light shirt, and a tie. The neutral grey-ochre background is devoid of objective detail and concentrates attention upon the face and hands. The palette is restrained, built upon closely related grey, ochre, and brownish tones. The painting is executed with soft hatching brushwork; the manner is restrained and precise, and the realist style with its pronounced psychological characterisation reveals the image of a man of intellectual labour.
