At the High-Mountain Ice Rink

Description

Author: Kasteyev, Abylkhan. 1904-1973
Set in the natural bowl of the Medeu high-mountain ice rink, the landscape depicts an ice sheet in the foreground lined with dense rows of spectators, with flags fluttering along its edge. The rink is encircled by snow-covered slopes dotted with dark fir trees. Beyond them rise snow-white mountain ridges, with majestic snowy peaks dominating the background beneath a clear, light blue sky. The composition is built on the juxtaposition of the lively ice rink in the foreground and the monumental mountain landscape. Executed in a realistic style, the light, wintry palette draws on a richness of cool white-and-blue tones of snow and mountains, accented by the dark notes of firs and spectators alongside vivid splashes of color from the flags.
