Fighting Horses

The dynamic genre-animalistic composition depicts two rearing horses - one dark, one light - locked in a struggle in the foreground; in the background, along the horizon line, the silhouettes of grazing horses are visible. The colour scheme is built on the deep blue-black tonality of the nocturnal landscape, out of which the figure of the grey horse emerges as a bright patch. The expressive, impasto painterly manner, with its active brushwork, conveys the tension and speed of the movement. The motif of animals in conflict evokes the theme of natural elemental force.
