Portrait of K. Mukhamendzhanov

Description

Author: Dzhusupov, Ali. 1928-1976
A bust-length portrait of a man in a study interior against a bookshelf, seated in a contemplative pose with one hand supporting his head and a notebook in the other. The composition is built on the intersection of the shelves’ verticals with the diagonal of the bowed figure, creating a sense of an intimate, introspective setting. The colouring is contrasting: the dark blue sweater and the ochre-red tone of the desk are set off by the varied polychromy of the book bindings. The painterly manner is generalized - large, laconic planes of the face and figure coexist with the more fragmented, decorative handling of the background.
