Nasybai Keli

Description

In everyday life, the Kazakh people used various types of keli (mortars) adapted for different needs. The Nasybai keli is designed for grinding nasybai, the crushed dried tobacco leaves. It is made of wood in the shape of a deep vessel. It dates back to 1940. This keli was acquired by museum staff in 2005 during an expedition to collect exhibits from a resident of the village of Kurenbel in the Zhulalinsky district. Its appearance resembles a scoop. Except for a chip on one part of the edge, the rim has a rounded shape. The bottom of the keli is recessed, and the handle is wide and comfortable to hold. There is a special small spatula-spoon used for crushing nasybai.
