Zhambyl Regional Historical and Local Lore Museum

The Zhambyl Regional Museum of History and Local Lore was established in 1931. Initially, the institution held the status of a city museum; however, in the late 1940s, it was granted the status of a regional museum of history and local lore.

The museum’s first and most valuable exhibits included collections of archaeological, numismatic, and ethnographic items, as well as historical documents and photographs. The scientific description and dating of the archaeological sites at that time were carried out by the young scholar M.E. Masson. A significant contribution to the museum's establishment and its early operations was made by the well-known Kazakh archaeologist, Candidate of Historical Sciences, G.I. Patsevich.

Currently, the museum operates four scientific departments: the collections department, the history department, the department of archaeology and ethnography, and the department of contemporary history. Since 1980, the museum has included an exhibition hall with an area of 303 square meters. In 1978, the museum received a specially constructed three-story building located in the center of Taraz. This building houses 13 exhibition halls that chronologically cover the main stages of Kazakhstan’s history - from the paleontological era to the present day.

The museum actively participated in archaeological expeditions exploring ancient settlements and cultural monuments such as Tekturmas, Bai-Tobe, and Yany-Korgan. Museum staff member A.P. Popov conducted excavations of the ancient Taraz bathhouse, dating from the 12th to the 19th centuries. As a result of these studies, the museum's collection was significantly enriched. Currently, the museum’s holdings include more than 35,000 storage units.

In 2002, to mark the 2000th anniversary of the city of Taraz, the museum was fully renovated and three new pavilions were opened: the “Museum of Ancient Turkic Script and Stone Statues,” the “Taraz - City History Museum - 2000,” and the “L.V. Brümmer Art Museum.” The total exhibition space of the modern museum complex amounts to 2,000 square meters.

The nature department features a rich paleontological collection. It displays fossilized remains of marine animals, bones of large land animals, petrified trees, and numerous specimens typical of the region’s flora and fauna.

The archaeology department showcases Stone Age tools discovered by a scientific expedition led by Professor Kh.A. Alpyssbayev in the Karatau Mountains. Also on display are human remains, Bronze Age artifacts, sacrificial figurines from the Saka period, arrow and spearheads, and a rare bronze helmet. Notably, only three such helmets have been found in the entire CIS, and one of them was discovered in the Zhambyl Region.

The exhibition hall dedicated to the Taraz period presents a rich collection of both glazed and unglazed ceramic items. These include vessels of various sizes, kitchenware, water pipes, lamps, spherocones, banquet dishes, ossuaries used in burial rites, and bronze items for aromatic substances.

A particular pride of the museum is the “Museum of Ancient Turkic Script and Stone Statues.” The stone sculptures are harmoniously integrated into the natural setting. The exhibition comprehensively reveals the spiritual and material culture, as well as the historical heritage, of the ancient Turkic tribes and peoples.
