Loading images...

Description

The jug is executed in a style characteristic of Sogdian culture and reflects the features of the decorative and applied arts of the period. It is made of clay using a moulding technique followed by firing. The jug has a rounded body, a high neck, and a handle. The neck is designed for pouring liquids. The spout is shaped like a bird and decorated with copper, giving the object a distinctive decorative character. The ornamentation is executed using an applied relief technique, with individual elements plastically applied to the surface of the vessel. This method of decoration is characteristic of Sogdian art. The jug may have been used for domestic purposes and, possibly, in religious and ritual practices or on ceremonial occasions. The decorative elements may have had symbolic significance associated with the owner’s social status or worldview.
