Coin of the Turgesh Khaganate

Description

The coin is round with a square hole in the center. The edge of the coin has a convex rim, 3 mm thick. The central hole also has a rim, 1 mm thick. The obverse features a circular Sogdian legend in cursive, written counterclockwise. The Sogdian legend reads “xst ‘w ‘xswt’ wy pny.” The reverse features the Türgesh tamga, inscribed within the coin’s field between the thick, linear rim and the square hole; the square hole is outlined by a diamond, as part of the tamga. To the right of the tamga is a Turkic monogram. Above is the Sogdian legend in cursive script, “Vuu” – “Divine.” This is the epithet of the Türgesh Khagan.
