Torsyk

Description

Torsyk - one of the traditional vessels of the nomadic Kazakh people.
It is made from thick, tanned animal hide, dried in a special mold. This particular example is called “muiizdi torsyk” (horn-shaped torsyk). The surface of the vessel is decorated with the “qoshqar muiiz” (“ram’s horns”) ornament. The exterior is painted in a reddish-brown color and adorned with elegant patterns. At the top, there is a neck for a stopper, and on both sides loops are attached for threading a strap.
The torsyk was used to pour and store for long periods drinks such as kumys, ayran, and shubat. In the nomadic way of life, it was an indispensable household item.
