Description
A cauldron with a lid, on a tripod. A traditional Asian cast metal cooking pot with a semi-round bottom. Among the Kazakhs, the cauldron occupies one of the most important places among other dishes. All food (except koumiss) is cooked in a cauldron. It is popularly called not just Kazan, but “kara kazan” (here the word “kara” means sacred). The cauldron is cast from cast iron in the form of a hemisphere with two handles for easy grip. The cauldron is mounted on a tripod (ush butty oshak), and decorated with ornamental patterns. On top is a wooden lid resembling the shield of a Kazakh warrior, with four cones in a circle and patterns around the edges.
