Coin of the Ruler Vakhshutava (Turgesh Khaganate)

Description

Round with a square hole in the center. The coin has a convex rim along the edge. A rim also surrounds the central hole. The obverse features a circular Sogdian legend written in cursive, counterclockwise. The Sogdian legend xwt’w w’xswt’wy pny (Kamyshev, 2002) means “Coin of the ruler Vakhshutawa.” Tamga of the Turgesh people, with the runic sign “r” on the left and the Chinese character for yuan below, meaning “circulating coin.” The rim is linear.
