Self-portrait

Description

Author: Dzhusupov, Ali. 1928-1976
A self-portrait of the artist with a brush in hand against a depiction of a seascape and a wall of sketches. The composition is built on the figure’s three-quarter turn and the diagonal of the outstretched arm holding the brush, crossing the plane of the canvas. The colouring is contrasting and decorative; the painterly manner is plastic and generalized - the pronounced modelling of the face and hands is combined with the looser, more painterly handling of the background and the study. Top left – signature and date.
