Portrait of an Elderly Man. Sketch

Description

Author: Kasteyev, Abylkhan. 1904-1973
A bust-length portrait-study of an elderly man in profile facing left, executed in a free, fluent manner. The model is depicted with a greying beard, wearing a chapan and a fur-trimmed cap (börik); his expressive profile and meticulously rendered face contrast with the sketchily indicated clothing and background. The color palette is built on a warm ochre-sanguine range of brownish-red tones set against a light, neutral background, focusing attention on the character of the sitter. The concise, confident painting style with open, dynamic brushstrokes and an emphasized focus on psychological and ethnic characterization aligns the work with the tradition of the painterly study-a portrait from life.
