Description

Author: Folk Master
A pair of cuff bracelets - a fine example of 19th-century Western Kazakh jewellery, reflecting a characteristic tendency toward monumentality, strict symmetry, and geometric ornament. Broad and voluminous, the pieces feature scalloped edges that almost completely encircle the wrist. The front face of each carries six closed settings with red-backed coloured glass. The ornamental field is worked in stamping and chasing, with selective gilding highlighting key details of the pattern. The coloured glass inserts - traditionally known in Kazakh culture as köz (‘eye’) - were attributed an apotropaic function, while their substantial form reflected the owner’s status and dignity.
