Yesik Archaeological and Local History Museum

The Yesik Archaeological and Local History Museum is a cultural and educational institution that plays a special role in preserving, studying, and promoting the archaeological heritage of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The museum was founded in 1992 in the city of Yesik. At the initiative of the renowned archaeologist Bekmukhanbet Nurmukhanbetov, the first exhibition was opened in a spacious hall of one of the city's buildings. It featured archaeological finds from his excavations, as well as a model of the "Golden Man." The primary goal of the exhibition was to introduce the public to the historical and cultural heritage of the Saka people and to foster historical awareness among local residents.

On August 13, 1992, the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, made a working visit to the city of Yesik and viewed the exhibition. Expressing his warm gratitude, he noted: “Many thanks to our compatriots who work to pass on the ancient history of our people to future generations.” Following this visit, with the support of the Head of State and by the decision of the Akim of Almaty Region, Akhmetzhan Yessimov, the museum was granted official status. Since 1993, it has operated as the Almaty Regional Yesik Archaeological and Local History Museum. Today, the museum continues to actively serve visitors.

The museum's collection holds more than 1,250 unique artifacts. A significant contribution to the formation of the collection was made by archaeologist Bekmukhanbet Nurmukhanbetov. The core of the collection consists of artifacts discovered during archaeological expeditions at the burial mounds of Boryzhar and Kokmardan, as well as in the Otrar area and Southern Kazakhstan. The collection includes a wide range of archaeological, ethnographic, written, and numismatic materials.

The museum's exhibition is organized into several thematic halls:

1. "Independent Kazakhstan" Hall - features materials highlighting the historical significance of the Enbekshikazakh district and the burial mound where the "Golden Man" was found, along with informational panels dedicated to the First President of Kazakhstan N. A. Nazarbayev and the national symbols of the country.

2. Local History Hall - includes a natural and geographic corner with taxidermy specimens of wild animals and birds native to the region. It also features exhibitions dedicated to local craftsman D. Shokparov and one of the museum’s founders, I. Bagzhanov. Artifacts discovered within the district are also on display here.

3. Archaeological Hall - covers the period from the Stone Age to the 18th century. The exhibits include objects made of stone, bronze, iron, ceramics, and silver, all organized in chronological order.

4. "Treasures of the Yesik Burial Mound" Hall - dedicated to the symbol of Kazakh culture, the "Golden Man." This exhibit reconstructs the burial ritual of a Saka warrior from the Iron Age. It is one of Kazakhstan’s cultural trademarks and represents valuable scientific and cultural heritage.

The museum’s work goes beyond its exhibitions. It actively implements scientific, educational, and cultural projects. Traveling exhibitions are organized annually at the district and regional levels, and exhibitions from other regions of the country are also hosted, promoting cultural cooperation.

The Yesik Archaeological and Local History Museum is an important scientific and cultural center focused on preserving Kazakhstan’s rich historical heritage and passing it on to future generations.
