Museum of the Village of Kurchum

The Kurchum Village Historical and Local History Museum is a scientific and educational institution and one of the cultural heritage sites of the East Kazakhstan region. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the region’s history, ethnography, and natural wealth.

The museum was founded by local history enthusiast Mstislav Anatolyevich Kushnikov, who played a key role in establishing its collection. The first exhibits included eight antique items, among them old printed books, church utensils, and traditional ethnographic objects of the Kazakh people.

At the end of 1987, a new building was allocated to the residents of the Kurchum district for the museum, significantly enhancing its material and technical base. In February 1988, the museum officially acquired the status of a state institution and was registered as a district-level cultural institution.

The museum’s main activities include the preservation, promotion, and scholarly interpretation of historical and cultural heritage. Its key areas of work cover the region’s history, ethnography, archaeology, natural resources, and various stages of social development. The museum's collection houses archaeological artifacts, household items, folk crafts, photographs, and documentary sources.

The museum operates in two buildings. The second is a historic wooden structure built in the early 20th century. From 1939 to 1962, it housed the district military commissariat. Today, it serves as an additional exhibition space. A memorial plaque is mounted on its facade in honor of the district’s residents who perished during the Great Patriotic War.

The Kurchum Village Historical and Local History Museum actively participates not only in district-level but also in regional and national scientific and cultural events. It plays an important role in regional historical research and the shaping of public historical consciousness.
