Aset Naimanbayev Museum

In the village of Makanchy, located in the Urzhar district of East Kazakhstan Region, there is a museum dedicated to the prominent Kazakh poet, composer, and major figure of oral folk tradition Aset Naimanbayuly. This museum is a branch of the State Historical, Cultural, and Literary-Memorial Reserve-Museum named after Abai. The exhibition was opened in 1992 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the poet’s birth. The primary aim of the museum is to preserve for future generations the life and creative legacy of Aset, as well as to study and promote his literary and musical works.

The museum’s exposition was created with careful consideration of the historical and cultural context. Unfortunately, very few original written sources about the life of Aset Naimanbayev have survived, which posed certain challenges during the formation of the exhibition. Therefore, one of the commonly used methods in museum practice was employed - drawing on the memories of the poet’s contemporaries, written testimonies, and literary studies. This approach made it possible to reconstruct the poet’s spiritual image and clearly present his creative journey.

The museum showcases materials related to Aset’s literary legacy - manuscripts of his poems and epics, rare book editions, scholarly works and research articles devoted to the poet, recollections and evaluations by contemporaries, as well as by later generations of literary scholars. In addition, the museum has collected many materials connected to his work as a composer - sheet music of his songs, samples of folklore, and items of musical heritage. The exhibition is complemented by ethnographic household items and artifacts reflecting the cultural context of the era, in order to convey the spirit of the time in which the poet lived.

The museum also conducts ongoing scholarly work. This includes research in the fields of local history, literary studies, and musical culture aimed at the comprehensive study of the spiritual heritage of the Kazakh people. Museum staff not only study Aset Naimanbayev’s work but also regularly organize conferences, literary evenings, concerts, and various academic and cultural events dedicated to preserving his name.
