Karkarali Historical and Local History Museum
The Karkaraly Historical and Local History Museum is one of the most significant cultural, educational, scientific, and historical institutions in the city of Karkaraly, Karaganda Region. The museum was founded on November 7, 1977, on the initiative of a group of World War II veterans - A. Aimakov, S. Amanbayev, B. Imankulov, Sh. Mezgilbayev, and N. Spatayev - and was initially established on a voluntary basis. Local intellectuals and community activists - including B. Duanbekov, K. Baymukhanbetov, Zh. Kadaouov, E. Edigin, S. Tusipbekov, M. Aubakirov, T. Tokhmetov, B. Akhmetova, A. Omarbayev, and A. Akhmetov - played an important role in the museum’s early development. A museum council was formed, and Sh. Mezgilbayev was elected its first chairman.
According to Resolution No. 511 of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR dated October 5, 1979, and Order No. 462 of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR dated October 11, 1979, the Karkaraly Museum was officially granted the status of a branch of the Karaganda Regional Museum of Local History. From January 1, 1980, the museum began operating as an independent institution.
The museum is located in a building constructed in 1870 as an administrative office for the tsarist regional government. Locals referred to it as the “Aq Kense” (“White Office”). The building is recognized as a historical and architectural monument of the city of Karkaraly. In 1918, it housed the first Council of People's Deputies (Soviet) of the Karkaraly district. Over time, prominent political figures such as Nygmet Nurmakov, Mutalip Tatimov, Asilbek Asilbekov, and Uzbekali Zhanibekov worked within its walls. In 1934, a meeting of party activists was held in the building with the participation of prominent Soviet statesman S. M. Kirov - an event preserved in historical records.
Today, the museum’s collection includes around 8,300 artifacts. These include archaeological finds, ethnographic items, examples of traditional applied arts, numismatic collections, rare books, manuscripts, historical documents, photographs, and paintings by professional artists. Together, they reveal many aspects of the region’s history and cultural heritage. The museum's exhibition space covers 671.8 square meters.
The museum comprises seven main halls, which chronologically present the historical and cultural development of the Karkaraly region from the Stone Age to the modern period of Independent Kazakhstan. Each hall is devoted to a specific period in the socio-economic and political life of the region and showcases its spiritual and material culture. The Karkaraly Historical and Local History Museum serves as a vital scientific and cultural hub for preserving the rich historical legacy of the region, promoting the contributions of notable figures of Karkaraly, and fostering historical awareness and respect for cultural heritage among younger generations.
