Museum “Alash Arystary – M. Auezov”
The Mukhtar Auezov House-Museum - Alash Arystary is a cultural and educational institution with a scholarly focus, dedicated to the life and work of the classic of Kazakh literature - the great writer, playwright, and scholar Mukhtar Omarkhanuly Auezov - as well as to the spiritual heritage of the leading figures of the Alash movement. The museum serves as a vital center that reflects the historical and cultural foundations of the Kazakh national liberation movement, the formation and dissemination of Alash ideas, and Auezov’s role in these historic developments.
The museum-estate is located in Almaty at the historical address where Mukhtar Auezov lived during the last ten years of his life (1951-1961). This building, where the writer worked productively, holds exceptional cultural and historical value. It was officially opened as a museum in 1963. Later, the exhibition was expanded to include the life and legacy of Alash figures.
The museum includes several exhibition halls, each highlighting specific stages of Auezov’s life and work, as well as the historical and cultural context of the Alash idea:
1. Hall of Biography and Works of Mukhtar Auezov - presents materials and exhibits related to Auezov’s childhood, education, literary journey, dramatic works, and academic contributions. Special focus is given to his epic “The Path of Abai”, including manuscripts and various editions.
2. Hall of Alash Movement Figures - is devoted to the early 20th-century leaders such as Alikhan Bokeikhanov, Akhmet Baitursynuly, Mirzhakyp Dulatov, Zhusipbek Aimauytov, and others. Exhibits include their photographs, publications, personal belongings, and letters. Their ideological and spiritual connection with Auezov is also highlighted.
3. Hall “Auezov and the Alash Idea” - showcases Mukhtar Auezov’s participation in the Alash movement, his sociopolitical activity from 1917 to 1920, his publications (such as “Alash Urany”), and his creative parallels and collaboration with Alashorda members.
4. Writer’s Study and Living Quarters - authentically restored with original household items, his writing desk, bookshelves, and manuscripts. This space allows visitors to immerse themselves in Auezov’s personal and creative world.
The Mukhtar Auezov House-Museum - Alash Arystary is a significant scientific and cultural hub that illustrates the interconnection between the Kazakh national liberation movement, the Alash legacy, and classical literature. It regularly hosts academic conferences, literary evenings, and educational tours for students and schoolchildren. The museum also carries out research activities: studying the Alash heritage, collecting unpublished works of Auezov, building a digital archive and scholarly database.
