House-Museum of Shakir Abenov

The Shakir Abenov House-Museum is a literary and memorial institution dedicated to the life and creative work of a prominent figure in Kazakh literature and culture - the improviser, akyn (folk poet), storyteller, and spiritual mentor Shakir Abenov. The museum is located in the village of Kundyzdy in the Abai District of East Kazakhstan Region. It was opened in 2003 to mark the 100th anniversary of the akyn and is housed in the home that the poet himself built in 1962. Shakir Abenov lived in this house from the early 1960s until his death in 1994; it was here that he wrote and created many of his works. The opening of the house-museum became a significant cultural event aimed at preserving and promoting the akyn’s legacy.

This museum is not merely a place commemorating a single individual - it serves as a spiritual center that reflects an entire era of 20th-century Kazakh literature, folk poetry, and epic tradition. Shakir Abenov was a bearer of Kazakh epic poetry; he knew by heart and performed such classical zhyr as "Kyz Zhibek," "Alpamys," "Koroglu", and also authored numerous historical and philosophical dastans and poems. He maintained spiritual continuity with the students of Abai and other akyns and zhyraus of the Great Steppe.

The internal structure of the house has been preserved and designed as a historical and memorial space that authentically reflects the poet's era. The exhibition features personal belongings of the poet, his manuscripts, photographs, literary works, as well as traditional items associated with folk akyns - such as a dombra, chapan (robe), writing desk, and books. The exhibition also includes materials about the poet’s contemporaries and students. In recent years, major renovation work was carried out, modernizing the museum and transforming it into a full-fledged literary and memorial exhibition space. During the reconstruction, a comprehensive exhibition hall was created to more broadly represent key stages of the poet’s life and creative evolution. The updated display allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Shakir Abenov’s literary heritage and his spiritual and cultural contributions.

Today, the Shakir Abenov House-Museum stands as one of the significant spiritual centers in the historical and cultural landscape of the Abai region. It is an educational site where young people are inspired with love for national heritage, zhyr art, and the finest examples of oral folk literature. The institution organizes cultural and scholarly events, literary readings, and poetry evenings for schoolchildren, students, researchers, and literature enthusiasts.
