The Kyzylorda Museum of History and Local Lore

The History Museum of the City of Kyzylorda is a scientific and cultural institution dedicated to the systematic research, preservation, and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of the Kyzylorda region. The establishment and development of the museum are closely linked to the historical stages of Kazakhstan's independence.

In 2018, on the eve of the 200th anniversary of the city of Kyzylorda, a new museum building was constructed on the left bank of the city. The architectural design of the building was based on the original plans of the Central Executive Committee of the Kazakh ASSR, which was located in Kyzylorda during the period when the city served as the capital (1925-1929). This structure symbolizes historical continuity and aims to revive the architectural appearance of the city during its time as the capital. The newly constructed building was officially opened to the public under the name "History Museum of the City of Kyzylorda."

The museum was officially established on January 24, 2019, by a resolution of the Akimat (city administration) of Kyzylorda. As of today, the museum’s scientific collection comprises 1,283 artifacts. A total of 796 items are on display, including 287 from the main collection and 509 from the auxiliary collection. The collection includes ethnographic objects, photographs, historical documents, numismatic and archaeological items, household artifacts, and objects of cultural heritage.

The total area of the museum is 588.0 square meters, and the building is single-story. Of this, 222.4 square meters are designated for exhibitions, while 160.8 square meters are currently leased by the Kyzylorda Regional Election Commission. The facility is equipped in accordance with modern technical standards, with climate control and lighting systems installed in the exhibition halls.

At present, the museum operates three main exhibition halls, each of which thematically and informatively covers specific historical periods of the city of Kyzylorda:

“Formation of the Alash Party and the History of Ak-Mechet-Perovsk” Hall - This hall presents the development of Ak-Mechet in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the administrative and social structure of the Perovsk period, as well as the significance of the Alash movement in the Kyzylorda region. Archival documents, photographs, and rare historical exhibits are displayed.

“Kyzylorda - the Capital of Kazakhstan (1925-1929). Socio-Economic Development of the City (1938-1990)” Hall - This exhibition reflects the political, cultural, and economic role of the city during its time as the capital, along with its development during the Soviet era, including industrialization, public education, healthcare, housing construction, and other key sectors.

“Kyzylorda in the Years of Independence” Hall - This section highlights the city’s development after 1991, showcasing its socio-economic achievements, cultural transformations, and modernization processes. Exhibits focus on significant events, regional programs, new infrastructure projects, and visits by the President and the First President of Kazakhstan.

The History Museum of the City of Kyzylorda is an important cultural and institutional center that preserves and transmits knowledge about the past and present of the region to future generations. The museum’s scientific, cultural, and educational activities make a significant contribution to the systematic study of regional history and the formation of national historical consciousness.
