Terekty Historical and Local Lore Museum
The Terektinsky District Historical and Local History Museum is a structural subdivision of the West Kazakhstan Regional Historical and Local History Museum and was opened in 2023 in honor of the 90th anniversary of the Terekti District. The main goal of the museum is to comprehensively present the historical and cultural heritage of the region to residents and visitors, to preserve it, and to pass it on to future generations.
The thematic and exhibition content of the museum covers a wide historical period-from the Mesozoic era and the Jurassic period to the modern stage of Independent Kazakhstan. The exhibits are displayed in six thematic halls: “Archaeology,” “Human Evolution,” “Life of the Kazakh People in the 18th-20th Centuries,” “Hall of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” “Memorial Room of Writer Khamza Yesenzhanov,” and the “Alash” hall.
The Archaeology Hall features unique artifacts related to the Sarmatian culture that existed in the territory of Western Kazakhstan in the 4th-5th centuries BC. These include horse harnesses, women’s jewelry, household items, clay vessels, sacrificial stones, medieval combs, and pieces of jewelry art. These exhibits vividly reflect the material culture, beliefs, aesthetic preferences, and everyday life of ancient eras.
The exhibitions on the second floor of the museum cover the traditional life of the Kazakh people: hunting gear, women's ornaments, and ethnographic items such as men's belts. Materials dedicated to the period of the Second World War (1941-1945) are also presented, conveying the tragedy of historical events and the realities of military action.
The “Alash” hall, located in the museum’s basement, illustrates the tragic fate of the Kazakh people during the years of political repression. This section shows the life paths of the Kazakh intelligentsia who became victims of the totalitarian system, the everyday life of the camps, and the conditions of confinement in prison cells. This hall provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the essence of the repressions of the first half of the 20th century.
The Terektinsky Historical and Local History Museum serves as an important cultural and educational institution, playing a significant role in preserving the historical memory of the region, covering its archaeological, ethnographic, and political past.
