Aktogai Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum

The Aktogay Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum is a major scientific and educational institution dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotion of the historical memory and cultural heritage of the Aktogay District in the Karaganda Region. The museum was originally established in 1986 as a local branch of the Zhezkazgan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore. On June 7, 1991, it was restructured into an independent Aktogay Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum by Decree No. 91-r of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR. This status laid the foundation for the museum’s structural and scholarly development. The total area of the museum is 356.1 square meters.

Main Exhibition Areas:

The museum's permanent exhibitions cover the archaeological monuments of the Aktogay region, its ethnographic features, key historical periods, prominent local figures, and major socio-political events. The archaeological section displays ancient artifacts discovered within the district - ceramic vessels, tools, and items related to burial practices. The ethnographic section features household items, models of traditional yurts, examples of jewelry, national clothing, and artisan crafts made of wood and metal.

The museum conducts systematic work not only in the field of exhibitions, but also in the following areas:

• conducting scholarly research related to the local history of the region;

• collecting, cataloguing, and preserving artifacts and historical records;

• organizing educational tours and programs for school and university students;

• holding commemorative and thematic exhibitions, roundtable discussions, lectures, and cultural events.

The Aktogay Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum serves not only as a district-level institution, but also as a significant regional scientific and cultural center playing a vital role in preserving ethnocultural values and historical heritage. It fulfills an important mission in fostering historical awareness, patriotism, and respect for the spiritual legacy of the nation, remaining a relevant cultural institution in contemporary Kazakhstan.
