Lisakov Upper Tobyl Museum of History and Culture

The Museum of History and Culture of Upper Tobol in the City of Lisakovsk is one of the leading scientific and cultural institutions focused on preserving, studying, and widely promoting the ancient history and ethnocultural heritage of Northern Kazakhstan. The museum was founded in 1991 and initially operated as a branch of the Kostanay Regional Museum of History and Local Lore, financed by the city budget.

The foundation of the museum’s collection consisted of valuable exhibits transferred from the historical-industrial museum of the Lisakovsk Mining and Processing Plant - an enterprise that played a key role in the formation of the city. These materials were collected by S.M. Lyapustin, the founder of museum work in Lisakovsk. Since 1992, the museum’s collection began to include archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, discovered at the Lisakovsk necropolis and settlement. These scientific discoveries were made by archaeologist E.R. Usmanova, a specialist from the Saryarka Institute of Archaeology at the Karaganda State University named after academician E.A. Buketov. The value of these artifacts lies in their affiliation with the Andronovo historical and cultural community (18th-13th centuries BCE) and their broad representation of the material world of that era.

The archaeological collection was later complemented by an ethnographic exhibition that reflects the material and spiritual culture of the region’s multiethnic population. This section comprehensively presents the traditional cultures of Kazakhs, Russians, Ukrainians, Germans, Tatars, and other ethnic groups living in the Lisakovsk region. In 1999, the museum received the status of an independent cultural institution and continued its operations as an autonomous entity. In August 2001, a renewed permanent exhibition was opened, featuring the following sections:

4. "History of the City of Lisakovsk"

The museum’s scientific and cultural concept is based on the idea of “Human in the History of the Steppe.” At its core is the representation of the human life cycle - from birth to death - including cyclical transitions, economic activity, religious beliefs, and everyday life. This approach enables a reflection of the evolution of human material culture from ancient times to the present. In 2013, the city administration decided to relocate the museum to a new building. In July of the same year, the museum’s main collection and material-technical base were transferred to a new facility with an area of 427.1 square meters.

The Museum of History and Culture of Upper Tobol in Lisakovsk serves as a scientific and cultural center that plays an important role in the systematic study of archaeology, ethnography, and local history.
