Birzhan Sal Historical and Local Lore Museum

The Birzhan Sal District is a region with a rich history, named after one of the greatest akyns (folk poets) of Kazakhstan. The establishment of a local history museum in the district was a necessity and a response to the call of time, intended to make a significant contribution to the development and promotion of the region’s historical and cultural heritage.

In early 2018, the Akim of the Birzhan Sal District, Yermek Bekenuly Nugmanov, together with a native of the district-its pride and a devoted son, Bayangali Takanuly Alimzhanov-proposed the idea of establishing the Birzhan Sal Historical and Local Lore Museum. The initiative received broad support.

As the district akimat allocated a suitable building for the museum (a separate standalone facility that had undergone major renovation), the staff of the Akmola Regional Historical and Local Lore Museum prepared a traveling ethnographic exhibition from the regional museum’s collections for the museum’s opening.

The grand opening of the Birzhan Sal Historical and Local Lore Museum took place on December 28, 2021, in the city of Stepnyak, with the participation of the Akim of Akmola Region, Yerbolat B. Marzhikpayev.

Until June 2023, the Birzhan Sal Historical and Local Lore Museum was on the balance of the State Municipal Public Enterprise “Birzhan Sal District House of Culture,” under the Department of Culture and Language Development of the Birzhan Sal District. On June 15, 2023, the museum was transferred from the municipal ownership of the Birzhan Sal District to the municipal ownership of the Akmola Regional Historical and Local Lore Museum.

The total area of the building is 162.4 m².

The Birzhan Sal Historical and Local Lore Museum is located at:

41 Birzhan Sal Street, Stepnyak City, Birzhan Sal District, Akmola Region.

The main exhibition hall of the museum features nine thematic sections:

• Flora and Fauna (nature of the region, birds and animals);

• Archaeology of the Region;

• Traditional Kazakh Jewelry;

• Culture and Ethnography of the Kazakh People;

• Biography and Creative Legacy of Birzhan Sal;

• Life and Works of B. Alimzhanov;

• Through Fire to Victory;

• The Afghan War (December 27, 1979 - February 15, 1989);

• “Journey into Childhood”: household items from the 1970s-1980s-1990s.
