Syrdarya District Historical and Local Lore Museum
The Syrdarya District Museum of History and Local Lore, a branch of the Kyzylorda Regional Museum of History and Local Lore, is a scientific and cultural institution dedicated to the systematic study, preservation, and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of the Aral region (Syrdarya area). The museum was initially established in 1990 as a grassroots initiative and, beginning in March 1993, began operating as a structural branch of the Kyzylorda Regional Museum of History and Local Lore. It received official status in 1996 by Order No. 31 of the Kyzylorda Regional Department of Culture. In 2024, the foundation of a "Spirituality Center" was laid in the district, and since February 20, 2025, the museum has continued its activities in a new, modern facility.
Currently, the museum occupies a total area of 313.8 square meters. Its collection consists of 11,801 artifacts, of which 7,115 belong to the main collection, and 4,686 to the auxiliary collection. The museum's materials provide valuable insight into the administrative and territorial development of Syrdarya District, as well as its economic and cultural progress and the lives of notable historical figures and public figures from the region.
The museum’s exhibits are housed in a single spacious hall titled "The History of Syrdarya District", which is organized into the following thematic sections:
• Ancient and medieval history of the region (Asanas and Kyshkala settlements);
• Natural and geographical features (flora and fauna);
• Sacred sites and historical personalities: warriors (batyrs), judges (biys), Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of Socialist Labor, deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR;
• The Great Patriotic War, the Afghan War, the Chernobyl disaster, and the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site;
• Outstanding figures in agriculture, education, and culture;
• Milestones in the district’s development during the years of independent Kazakhstan.
Among the museum’s unique exhibits are the sword of Batyr Aralbay, a full set of traditional Kazakh weapons (bes qarū), a cabinet (asadāl) used by Abai Kunanbayev, the chest of Biy Sauranbay, a 200-year-old yurt dome, a 100-year-old wooden bed, a traditional yurt door (syqyrlawyq), various wool and flat-woven carpets, saddlebags, cup holders, copper and ceramic vessels, a collection of kobyz instruments, traditional jewelry, rare manuscripts, and archival documents. The hall also features works by members of the Union of Artists of Kazakhstan, including Sh. Seitmuratov, Sh. Samenov, Zh. Makhanbet, and Zh. Ismagulov.
One of the museum's core missions is to pass on the centuries-old cultural heritage of the Kazakh people to future generations through a scientifically grounded and educational approach. To this end, museum staff conduct research on ethnographic artifacts related to the district's history and prepare scholarly descriptions of these items.
As part of its research activities, the museum maintains close collaboration with local historians, schoolteachers, and village elders. Field studies and oral history interviews contribute significantly to enriching the museum’s database with authentic materials. The museum’s research encompasses all stages of the district’s historical development - from ancient times to the present - and includes the study of historical and cultural monuments, agriculture, and the lives of prominent individuals in science, education, and the arts.
The museum’s research plans are reviewed and approved by the academic council of the Kyzylorda Regional Museum of History and Local Lore. These plans form the foundation for the structure of exhibitions and their thematic content.
The Syrdarya District Museum of History and Local Lore is a vital cultural institution that not only systematically explores the history of the region but also makes a significant contribution to preserving the historical memory of the nation by integrating scientific research with educational outreach.
