Literary Museum of Ilyas Esenberlin

The Ilyas Yesenberlin Literary Museum is a significant historical, cultural, and scholarly-educational institution that holds a special place in the spiritual and cultural landscape of Kazakhstan. The museum was established to preserve, systematically study, and widely promote the creative legacy of Ilyas Yesenberlin - a classic of Kazakh literature, writer, historian, and public figure. The institution was officially opened on December 24, 1999, through the initiative and support of the Akimat of the city of Atbasar and the writer’s family. The grand opening ceremony was attended by members of the intelligentsia, cultural and artistic figures, and local residents.

The museum’s exhibition is based on authentic artifacts that comprehensively reflect various stages of the writer’s life and creative path. The exhibition complex includes Yesenberlin’s personal belongings, a reconstructed interior of his study, family and professional photographs, manuscripts, rare publications, and a collection of his works published in various print media. Among the unique items are an audio recording of the writer’s voice and the original manuscript of his renowned work The Boat That Crossed the Ocean. The museum also holds a collection of books with autographs by prominent Kazakh writers who were in creative dialogue with Yesenberlin - a valuable literary and cultural source for studying the development of Kazakh literature in the 20th century.

In 2015, on the occasion of the writer’s 100th anniversary, large-scale jubilee events were organized in the city of Atbasar. As part of these events, a monument to Ilyas Yesenberlin (sculpted by renowned Kazakh artist I.L. Sedletsky) was erected in the city’s central square. An updated museum exhibition was launched, and a national scientific-practical conference titled A Nationally-Oriented Hero-Writer, dedicated to Yesenberlin’s life and work, was held. The conference brought together leading literary scholars, writers, historians, university faculty, and students from across the country.

That same year, the museum gained international recognition. At the initiative of the museum and with the support of the Kazakh side, Ilyas Yesenberlin’s creative legacy was presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurt Bookmesse) - the world’s largest international book exhibition held in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. This event was an important act of cultural diplomacy aimed at promoting Kazakh literature on a global scale.

Today, the Ilyas Yesenberlin Literary Museum not only preserves the cultural heritage of the nation but also plays a key role in conducting research, educational, and outreach activities related to current issues in Kazakh literature and history. The museum’s team is actively engaged in shaping the spiritual and cultural awareness of younger generations, preserving historical memory, and fostering national identity and patriotism.
