Wooden sticks with runic inscriptions (replica)

Zhambyl Regional Historical and Local Lore Museum

Found on the bank of the Talas River, at a place called Ashyk-Tas, at a depth of 5 meters during geological exploration works. Made of spruce wood. Four lines of runic symbols (letters) are carved on all four sides of the stick. The original is kept in the Hermitage Museum (Moscow). Discovered by I.F. Marningyan in 1932. Studied by M.E. Masson, H.N. Orkhun, I.A. Batmanov, Ch. Zhumagulov, A.S. Amanzholov, I.L. Kyzlasov, and A.M. Shcherbak.

Dating: 8th-10th centuries.
Material: wood.
Dimensions: 15.6 × 1.5 × 1.4 × 1.2 cm.
