To the right, in the background, stands a prominent haystack, with smaller haycocks scattered across the field in the foreground and to the left. A distant mountain range melts into the hazy light of a pale sky. Rendered with fine, impasto brushstrokes, the work features highly generalized forms. The color palette is built on the light, ocher-yellow tones of sun-scorched grass, echoed by the cool bluish-purple shades of the mountains and sky, evoking the radiant warmth of a midsummer day and an expansive sense of space.
