Description

Author: Leontiyev, Leonid. 1913-1983
A genre composition themed around the fishing industry, rendered in the hallmark aesthetic of Soviet realism’s “Severe Style,” featuring a dense painterly texture and a rich, saturated palette. In a striking close-up, a young Kazakh woman in a red headscarf and matching dress is depicted in profile facing left; with her left hand, she holds onto a wire strung at shoulder level, upon which large fish-rendered with dynamic, silvery-white brushstrokes-are hung to dry. Serving as the backdrop are the deep blue sea and vessels with slender vertical masts. The resonant contrast between the figure’s vibrant red silhouette, the cool blue of the sea, and the silver of the fish, combined with a generalized, decorative treatment of form, imbues the image with a monumental presence and a life-affirming expressiveness.
