A landscape with an animalist motif: at the centre of the composition is a dense flock of sheep at water troughs, conveyed through a scattering of white and dove-grey spots; beyond it a wide valley opens up, with sheepfolds on the horizon. The colouring is built on the contrast between the warm ochre-yellow-brown range of the foreground and the cool dove-blue and whitish tones of the distance. The composition is panoramic; the manner of execution is sketch-like and generalised, with small, impasto brushstrokes on the border between representation and decorative abstraction.
